| 8th July, 2022 The place of my birth revisited |
|
This is a 2 up 2 down in Great Driffield E Yorkshire. Revisited 55 years after I left and it still looks remarkably the same. It had no bathroom, no inside toilet no phone, no TV, no central heating, three children in one small bedroom and yet i have very fond memories of this place and the people of this town that I was brought up with. The story of how I went from this to Doom Bar Bob in Altrincham is best left for another day. |
| 8th July, 2022 Driffield Canal |
|
Driffield was once a busy town. Grain would be transported by horse and cart to this man made inland port, stored and processed in mills ready to transport downstream then coal would be transported upstream. The mill on the left has now been converted into luxuary flats. Horses and carts still in use when I was a boy but the canal sadly closed, superseded by a railway. |
| 8th July, 2022 Jelly baby Factory |
|
Driffield, being in the centre of a farming area also had factories associated with farm produce. This is the remains of a large 4 story factory that produced red jelly babies. Each colour was produced by a seperate factory then transported to a packaging plant Other factories included Glaxo that supplied the country with National dried milk through the war years and beyond. Sadly it was demolished and is now a housing estate. |
| 8th July, 2022 Glaxo as it was when i was a boy. |
|
This is the glaxo factory as it was. Those cans are bloody heavy!! and thousands had to be handballed into the factory every day to compete with burmese factories. Health and saftey would have shut it down in a blink of an eye if it existed today but it did provide work and glaxo did take care of families who worked there. |
| 9th July,2022 RAF Driffield |
|
Raf driffield played an important part in both world wars hosting british, french and american airmen.
My mom, a keen dancer, had fond memories of dancing with them at the local dance hall even though hitler bombed it to hell sending 143 luftwafer bombers over in one day in an attempt to obliterate it.
Dad who was yet to meet mom was in the middle east at the time transporting messages to the front line as a despatch rider. I guess i inherited dads motorcycle skills. Thanks dad!!
They now plan to turn it into a housing estate along with all the other housing that has replaced factories, teniss courts and the cattle market. Suprising enough the population doubed since I was a boy despite the lack of any works. |
